Female entrepreneur ‘Makesaarup’ speaks about her job as a makeup artist who boosts the confidence of her female entrepreneur clients

Sarah Camphuysen, also known as ‘Makesaarup,’ has been working as a makeup artist (MUA) for four years, serving a diverse range of clients, including many female entrepreneurs. She spoke to Altura Magazine about running her own business, the connection between makeup and self-confidence, and how she started on her journey four years ago.
“I always wanted to do something creative. My father is an artist, and my mother is always engaged in creative activities,” she says. This is where her passion for makeup began. Initially, Camphuysen wanted to become a tattoo artist, but eventually, she started experimenting with makeup. “I began experimenting with different things, and that eventually turned into a passion for makeup.”
Her love for makeup grew as she explored different techniques and styles. She enjoyed how makeup could transform a face, highlight features, and express individuality. Over time, she realized that makeup was not just about aesthetics, but also about how it made people feel.
Standing out as a makeup artist is a double-edged sword for Camphuysen. “On one hand, people tell me to stay mainstream to attract more clients. But if you go too mainstream, you end up blending in, becoming one of many. That’s why it’s so important to know what makes you unique—your iconic look.” Camphuysen focuses her makeup looks on what she finds beautiful. “I would describe my style as creative, bold, and a little out of the box.”
By developing her own style, Camphuysen has been able to create a personal and successful path. “You have to try to develop your own signature style so that when someone is looking for a specific look, they immediately think, ‘Hey, I need Sarah for this.’”
For Camphuysen, being a makeup artist is an incredibly inspiring job. Seeing her clients transform—not just in their makeup but also in their confidence—is what she loves most about her work. “The way they feel afterward… They can look completely happy or even shocked at their own reflection.” This transformation is what drives her passion. The process of applying makeup is more than just a service—it’s an experience that empowers people to see themselves in a new light.
“Someone can feel truly beautiful because they’ve never seen themselves this way before.” This moment of self-discovery is what Camphuysen finds so rewarding. Makeup can enhance a person’s natural beauty, while also giving them a fresh perspective on themselves.
Camphuysen started her journey as a makeup artist and quickly realized that word-of-mouth marketing is even more powerful than social media. “Connecting with people, building trust, and letting your work speak for itself is the best way to grow in this industry.” She values the relationships she builds with clients, understanding their needs and delivering looks that make them feel confident.
Working with female entrepreneurs, she has noticed that there are many misconceptions about makeup. “Many people think makeup is about covering up, as if you’re putting on a mask, but that’s not true at all. It’s actually about enhancing the beautiful features you already have.” Makeup shouldn’t be about hiding. “A good makeup artist works with your face, not against it.”
For Camphuysen, makeup is the path that allows her to express her creativity while making others feel their best. It’s more than just applying products, it’s about empowerment. “Makeup is a reminder of how beautiful we can be while knowing that we are already beautiful.” Through her work, she hopes to inspire confidence and help people embrace their unique beauty.
